The Courage To Be Honest: The Truth About Alignment

alignment the practice of joy

Alignment is a word that gets tossed around a lot. We talk about living in alignment, making aligned decisions, and following what feels right. But what does alignment actually mean? And more importantly, what does it require from us?

Here’s the truth: Alignment isn’t just about doing what feels good or chasing what excites us. It’s about something much deeper—having the courage to be honest. With ourselves. With others. Even when it’s uncomfortable. Even when it means disappointing people.

When a Yes Isn’t Really a Yes

Recently, I made a commitment from a place of excitement and wanting to belong with a dash of FOMO. At the time, it felt exciting, but deep down, it wasn’t a full-body YES. I was stretching myself beyond my actual capacity, and it didn’t take long before I started feeling the weight of that choice.

Once I became aware of the misalignment it became clear I had two options:

  1. Push through, override my needs, and pretend everything was fine.
  2. Tell the truth.

I chose the truth. I had the hard conversations. I admitted that I had overextended myself and that I needed to realign. And you know what? I was met with compassion and appreciation. Because the truth is, your people want you to be aligned. They want the best version of you, not the depleted, over-giving, resentful version.

Honoring Your Truth Creates Space for Joy

Alignment requires courage. Joy requires courage. It asks us to be honest about what’s working and what’s not. It calls us to listen to our inner wisdom instead of people-pleasing, overcommitting, or forcing ourselves into spaces that no longer fit.

So, I invite you to check in with yourself today:

  • What’s not working for you right now?
  • What do you truly want instead?
  • Where can you be more honest—with yourself and with others?

Because when you honor your truth, you create space for true joy, deeper connection, and a life that actually feels like YOURS.
